Say hi to the Ryans! I first photographed big sister Annie for her 1st birthday, and then little sister Charley when she was a month old, but this is my first time shooting the whole family together! We met at the Stony Brook duck pond on a beautiful day to take family Christmas photos. I've taken pictures at the duck pond on many occasions, but this particular time is going to stick in my mind for quite some time. Near the end of the session, I crouched down to take a photo of the two beautiful girls playing together on a boulder. That's when dad Patrick said to me "uh, heads up, there's a swan really close to you". I turned around......and that majestic, elegant swan nipped me right in the butt! Even as a pet photographer, this was definitely a first. (See the last photo in the slideshow for a mug shot of my avian assailant, who to my knowledge is still at large). Despite this rude interruption, we got beautiful shots of a very loving family that I hope they'll treasure for a very long time. Enjoy!

This Sunday the 16th, Echo Pharmacy in Miller Place is partnering with Pups for Parkinson's, Inc. to host a dog walk event from 10am-3pm. The walk will be held in Sylvan Park, which is located next to Echo Pharmacy. Funds raised will be donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. There will be contests, auctions, vendors, an agility course and more. I've donated a basket for them to include in their Chinese auction, with a free photo session and a $100 print credit.

I posted recently about a program I was doing at the Middle Country Public Library in Centereach, shooting fall festive pet portraits for patrons of the library. It was a great success! Thirty families came down to participate in the event. There were 28 dogs and even 2 ferrets in attendance! Besides a little bit of territory marking, all the animals were on their best behavior and got along really well.
I want to thank every family that came in with their pets.
Because I met so many different pets in one day, there were a lot of firsts for me. I photographed ferrets for the first time, which was fun. I also figured out a technique for shooting a photo of a dog who is deaf (it involves some foot stomping and lots of arm waving!). I also met a few dog breeds I'd never seen before, like pomapoos and cavachons. The library expressed interest in doing another program next year with a winter theme, so I look forward to that! Thanks so much to Sara Fade, the librarian and dog lover who put the program together. Here are a few of the photos I shot at the program. Enjoy!

In 1996, my family went to the Riverhead Fair, a tradition for us every October that continues to this day. The Kent Animal Shelter had a booth there with the most adorable puppy we'd ever seen, fluffy with a big bushy tail and huge paws for his tiny size. They told us several families were interested in him and whoever got to the shelter first the next morning would have the chance to adopt him.
We got there hours before the shelter even opened.
We named him Whiskey. Later on, he grew into those gigantic paws and his trainer identified him as an Irish Wolfhound mix.
He was the prince of our family for 11 years, until we lost him to cancer in 2007.

They didn't have any that were good with cats, so they pointed me to Southampton Animal Shelter, where I found my sweet boy Basil, in whose memory I'll be walking this year. When I heard about their Wines and Canines Walk at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard, I thought it was the perfect way to give back to a place that has given me so much.
That first year and last year, my friends and I were the team that raised the most money for the event. We'd like to try and make this year our best year yet. If you can donate, please click here. Angela's House is an organization that assists families of children with severe disabilities or conditions that require a lot of medical attention or equipment to survive. This amazing organization was started by Bob and Angie Policastro, whose daughter Angela was one such child. Their experience getting Angela the care she needed revealed to them the gaps in the system that could have provided them with support and resources to improve Angela's life, and theirs. They started Angela's House to make sure families going through similar issues would have an advocate on their side. Since 1992, they have been coordinating services for these families to get medically frail children the help they need, both at home and at residential facilities.
The work they do is incredibly inspiring. I've donated a basket with a free photo session and a $100 print credit for them to raffle off at their Rock and Roll Barbecue fundraiser this Sunday at 89 North in Patchogue. I've also seen some of the other fantastic raffle baskets they've collected and I can tell you there will be something there for everyone. I hope their fundraiser is so successful, because the work they do is so important for the families in this community. I'm really excited to be involved. This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of photographing LI-DOG's Pints-n-Paws Luau. It was so much fun being around like-minded people (AKA crazy dog lovers like myself). I'm really thankful to the organizers, especially Ginny and Irene, for having me. Off Key Tikki in Patchogue was an absolutely beautiful venue and I'm definitely going to be back some day soon for the delicious food and the fantastic view. I also can't wait to photograph the handsome Romeo, whose mom Joyce won the raffle basket I donated.

I've got some fun news. This weekend, on Sunday, June 12th, I'll be attending the Pints-n-Paws Luau at Off Key Tiki in Patchogue hosted by LI-DOG. LI-DOG is a group of Long Island dog owners that advocate for more access for dogs at parks and beaches. Who doesn't want to see more furry faces out and about? There will be music, raffles, contests and food, and your canine companion is welcome to attend. Admission is $15 in advance or $20 at the door and includes complimentary BBQ, a free raffle ticket and more. I'll be donating a basket to the raffle, including a free photo session and a $100 print credit toward purchases. I'm also excited that the coordinators have asked me to shoot the event! Running a home-based photography business is an amazing dream. I get to create artworks that become an important part of my clients' lives. Just like anything in life, there are downfalls, though. When the commute to your job consists of walking across the hall, you don't get a lot of sunshine during the work week. I'm seriously lacking in Vitamin D and cabin fever can set in during the bleak midwinter. That's why I can't wait for spring to come so I can do some more outdoor sessions. I've been going out every few weeks this winter scouting locations I can't wait to shoot at once the 2 feet of snow on my lawn thaws!
A few weeks ago (before the lovely blizzard whited out the landscape), I visited Lake Ronkonkoma for a personal project and realized what a great location it could be for a photo session with families and kids. The county park is located on Lake Shore Road, on the north side of the lake. As Long Island's largest lake, there is a huge number of portrait opportunity spots all along the lake front.
The wildlife in the area is very used to the presence of people, so expect some close encounters with the ducks, geese and seagulls that call the lake their home. They'll be happy to get in the background of your photos!

The table area is another great spot, especially for a family group photo or some candid photos of a picnic lunch. The fields nearby offer a beautiful view. You can also capture some shots of family fun on the baseball field and basketball court. Finally, you can reward your kids for a job well done by spending some time at the playground.
Make sure dear old Dad stays firmly on shore, though. Those Lady of the Lake stories are probably myths, but better to be safe than sorry, right? ;)

It's not typical to get a beautifully warm day in November on Long Island. When you do get one, you take advantage of it and head to the beach!
I shot this session with the Cameron Family at Robert Moses Beach, with the beautiful backdrop of sand, water and the Fire Island Lighthouse too! Apparently, a lot of other folks had the same idea. You can't tell from the photos, but the beach was packed. (Thank goodness for Photoshop's clone stamp tool).
We walked along the paths, strolled the beach, and even built a snowman out of sand and shells. His name? Sandy, of course.
This session shows that taking Christmas photos can be fun! Cruising the beach sure beats standing on line at the mall, huh?

Today I'm highlighting a fun family session I had at Heritage Park in Mt. Sinai.
I've been photographing the Bryan family since their baby shower for their first child! It's been great to watch their family grow over the years. At this session, we set out to capture their first family portrait since baby Liam arrived! He definitely inherited his older sister Morgan's big smile.
