When I think back to my childhood, a staggering majority of my happy memories are linked to summer vacations, and especially to the pool in my grandmother's backyard. My sister and I used to swim all day long, pretending to be mermaids, only coming out at night when we could no longer ignore the fact that we were wrinkled, shivering and starving. Nothing in the adult world compares to the joy and freedom a kid feels with the entire summer stretched out ahead of them. A few weeks ago, I captured evidence of that kind of joy when I went swimming with my sister Lisa, my sister-in-law Virginia and my niece/goddaughter Anna. Watching her splash around in the pool reminded me of how I used to do the same thing, before I started worrying about my hair getting wet, getting pool water in my contacts, my mascara running and other mundane adult concerns. Whereas I tiptoed my way in the water, she cannonballed in without hesitation. I wanted to whisper to her, "Don't grow up!", but instead I decided to just immortalize the moment with a few photos that I hope one day she can look back on, when summer vacations are a happy memory in her past. I hope you're all having as good a summer as Anna is. Email me at [email protected] or call631-256-7476 to schedule a session.
