This is Frodo and his mom Jackie. Jackie is my sister Lisa's best friend, so naturally the two of them try to get their dogs to love each other as much as they love each other. My dog nephew Ash, however, is a "people dog". He adores every human he ever meets. Other dogs...eh, not so much. That being said, Frodo is the closest thing to a doggy BFF that Ash has.
Recently, Lisa and Jackie came over to my house for a doggy (and human) play date, where inroads were made to bring the two pups closer. Even though I couldn't get a shot of the two of them together, if cautious butt sniffing is any indication, it went a long way :)
Here are a few of my favorite shots of the sweet and handsome Frodo!

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of photographing LI-DOG's Pints-n-Paws Luau. It was so much fun being around like-minded people (AKA crazy dog lovers like myself). I'm really thankful to the organizers, especially Ginny and Irene, for having me. Off Key Tikki in Patchogue was an absolutely beautiful venue and I'm definitely going to be back some day soon for the delicious food and the fantastic view. I also can't wait to photograph the handsome Romeo, whose mom Joyce won the raffle basket I donated.
Enjoy these photos of some seriously adorable pups!

I've got some fun news. This weekend, on Sunday, June 12th, I'll be attending the Pints-n-Paws Luau at Off Key Tiki in Patchogue hosted by LI-DOG. LI-DOG is a group of Long Island dog owners that advocate for more access for dogs at parks and beaches. Who doesn't want to see more furry faces out and about? There will be music, raffles, contests and food, and your canine companion is welcome to attend. Admission is $15 in advance or $20 at the door and includes complimentary BBQ, a free raffle ticket and more. I'll be donating a basket to the raffle, including a free photo session and a $100 print credit toward purchases. I'm also excited that the coordinators have asked me to shoot the event! I can't wait to photograph so many pups in one place. Learn more and buy tickets here.
I hope to see you there!

My sister adopted Ash from North Shore Animal League back in 2009. Since he's my dog nephew, I've been taking photos of him since he was a puppy. Now that Ash is 7 years old, he's started growing some very distinguished white hairs on his face and belly. He still acts just like a puppy, though. God help the squirrels in our back yard when Ash comes to visit, because he hasn't slowed down a bit. Even though I have tons of photos of him, this is the first time I've ever shot Ash in my studio, because it's on the second floor and he's deathly afraid of steps. His mommy had quite a time carrying him up the stairs for these photos. Here he is!

UPDATE: Due to a change in circumstances, Emma is back with her family and happier than ever. Thank you to everyone who shared this post to help this adorable girl!
-----------------
Emma is a sweet and gentle purebred blue nose pit bull who needs a loving home. Little Emma has had it tough. Her first owner was a backyard breeder, who forced her to have tons of litters of puppies way too early. Her second owner loved her and treated her well, but was forced to give her up when they moved to a place where she wasn't allowed. Luckily for Emma, her owners knew an animal lover who wouldn't let her down. My best friend Lauren and her husband Mike took Emma in to avoid her becoming just one more pit bull in a shelter. They are taking care of her until they can find her a good home.

Emma gets along great with their 3 dogs and she's good with kids. She's 3 years old, 45 lbs. and definitely the tiniest little pit bull I've ever seen. I mean, look at those short little legs in the picture to the right! So cute! When I met Emma, I couldn't believe how quiet and gentle she was. Even in a strange place with new people, she was on her best behavior during our photo session. Emma is healthy and house-trained, and knows her basic commands. I know she's going to make some family out there so happy. If you're in the Long Island area and you have room in your heart for a sweet thing like Emma, contact Lauren for more information at Lnpetrelli@gmail.com, or share this post with someone you think could give Emma the loving home she deserves!

I have loved animals all my life. My house has not been without a pet for 20 years. We've seen all kinds, too: cats, dogs, birds, lizards, turtles, fish, mice. My dog Basil, though, was the first dog I adopted as an adult. He wasn't a family pet. I picked him out, I cared for him, I bought his fancy food and he took up a lot of space in my bed, and in my heart. For 4 amazing years, he was mine all mine.
Basil didn't have an easy life. Before I adopted him from Southampton Animal Shelter, he lived in an animal hoarder's apartment with over 100 other dogs, in disgusting conditions. His teeth had been ground to nubs, probably from trying to escape. He had scars, physical and emotional. The tip of one of his ears was missing, possibly from a fight with another dog. He was very anxious. I decided I wanted to adopt him when we went for a walk outside the shelter and he let out a happy howl. I fell in love with him while I was filling out the paperwork and he jumped into my lap, despite the plethora of laps in the room he could have chosen.
From that day, Basil was my constant companion. Since I work from home, I really do mean constant. Basil made me happy every day. I don't have the words to express how much he meant to me.
In February of this year, Basil was diagnosed with cancer. By the time he showed any symptoms, it was too advanced to treat. The vet sent me home to make him comfortable until it was time. We spent a few days checking off items from Basil's bucket list, and on February 18th, when Basil began to have trouble walking, I made the decision to let him go.

Some of Basil's Bucket List: Eat a whole steak, visit the water, lay in a pile of toys, try ice cream
It will take a long time to get over the loss of my best friend. The one bright spot is that his death gave me clarity on something I have wanted for a long time: to expand my business into offering pet photography. I believe that pets are members of the family and should be memorialized as such. Now that he is gone, I treasure all the beautiful photos I took of Basil. Our pets stand by us through life and their portraits should hang on the walls next to ours as well.
I'm announcing this today for a special reason. April 3rd was the day the shelter told me that Basil arrived there from the horrible place where they rescued him. I figured that was the day he started his new life, so I decided back then that April 3rd would be his birthday. In the next few weeks, I'll be relaunching my website to reflect this new venture, but rest assured I'll still be serving my human clients faithfully. Follow my journey into pet photography on Instagram, and I'll be updating you here about my progress.
This is a new logo I will use for my pet photography. It's a sketch I did from my favorite photo of Basil, right down to the chunk missing from his ear.

To end, I'll urge you to give your pets a ton of hugs, and take a ton of photos while you're blessed with them.
As Anatole France said, "Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened".
I wholeheartedly agree.
Rest in Peace, Basil.
