Little Peyton is consistently the best-dressed kid I know. Add beautiful curls and a bubbly attitude to her impeccable style, and you've got a kid who's made to photograph. She was channeling Shirley Temple during our New Year's photo shoot, and had a lot of fun with the balloons. Here are a few of my favorite photos from her very glamorous session!

Happy New Year, readers!
I wish you a healthy and happy 2017.

I'm not going to lie. Last year, when sisters Mia and Julianna came into the studio for a holiday mini session, little sister Julianna was having none of me. Big sister Mia liked my corny jokes and silly faces, but I couldn't make Julianna smile for the life of me. She did not like the cut of my jib! Only after my sister's dog Ash was carried upstairs (he's 45 lbs and afraid of steps), did she crack a smile. He saved the day and we got some beautiful photos! Well, what a difference a year makes! When I got to their house a few weeks ago to do some backyard family photos, I won little Julianna over! In fact, I was hard pressed to get a photo of her without a grin on her face.
Her and her sister had a blast playing in the leaves, swinging and running around the yard. Here are some of my favorite photos from our family holiday session.

Little Miss Sophia here reminds me of a porcelain doll. She's got the cutest rosy cheeks and eyelashes that I'm very very jealous of. This is her first Christmas, and I'm so happy her parents brought her to my studio to document this special occasion. They even got involved for a few photos! I love audience participation :) Like a good model, Sophia even tolerated an outfit change, so we got double the cuteness.

Giovanni & Benjamin live all the way down in Florida, and during their first trip to New York with their dads last month, I got the pleasure of doing a holiday mini session with them. It was a quick one, because they had much better stuff to be doing. When you're used to Florida heat, playing outside with leaves in the brisk fall air is not an opportunity to be missed! These boys are super silly and funny and their relationship with each other is so loving and sweet. It was a blast to hang out with them and get to know them! Here are a few of the photos I captured of these adorable brothers.

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Gianna and her family when they came to my studio for holiday photos. Along for the ride were their two family dogs, Coda & Cadence. For being such young pups, they were so well-trained and did a great job looking at the camera throughout our photo shoot. When I get to work with such sweet and vivacious dogs, it really reaffirms how happy I am that I started photographing pets. Dogs are so full of life, I found myself smiling throughout their whole session, and even after they left. Not to be outshined by her furry friends, Gianna smiled beautifully in every frame, and you can really sense their connection in the photos of her and her dogs.

Say hi to the Ryans! I first photographed big sister Annie for her 1st birthday, and then little sister Charley when she was a month old, but this is my first time shooting the whole family together! We met at the Stony Brook duck pond on a beautiful day to take family Christmas photos. I've taken pictures at the duck pond on many occasions, but this particular time is going to stick in my mind for quite some time. Near the end of the session, I crouched down to take a photo of the two beautiful girls playing together on a boulder. That's when dad Patrick said to me "uh, heads up, there's a swan really close to you". I turned around......and that majestic, elegant swan nipped me right in the butt! Even as a pet photographer, this was definitely a first. (See the last photo in the slideshow for a mug shot of my avian assailant, who to my knowledge is still at large). Despite this rude interruption, we got beautiful shots of a very loving family that I hope they'll treasure for a very long time. Enjoy!

It's not typical to get a beautifully warm day in November on Long Island. When you do get one, you take advantage of it and head to the beach!
I shot this session with the Cameron Family at Robert Moses Beach, with the beautiful backdrop of sand, water and the Fire Island Lighthouse too! Apparently, a lot of other folks had the same idea. You can't tell from the photos, but the beach was packed. (Thank goodness for Photoshop's clone stamp tool).
We walked along the paths, strolled the beach, and even built a snowman out of sand and shells. His name? Sandy, of course.
This session shows that taking Christmas photos can be fun! Cruising the beach sure beats standing on line at the mall, huh?

Think it's too late to shoot that Christmas card photo? That's ok! Take advantage of having the whole family in town and come in after Christmas for family portraits in all the new sweaters you got from Santa!

Here are some photos from a holiday mini session I did  in my studio this season, with sisters Mia and Julianna. Holiday mini sessions last a half hour and are perfect when you just need a few shots in one outfit for a holiday card. This is an 8x8 collage I created for my client from the session. Collages are a good way to get a lot of variety without ordering a ton of prints. These make great gifts for grandparents, and look fantastic framed in a wall display going up your stairs, for instance.

Last week I had the privilege to shoot the Arts Academy Masquerade Gala Fundraiser for the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. Let me tell you, this wasn't just any old Halloween party, either. The detail and the thought that everyone put into their costumes was fantastic. The event was held at the Sea Star Ballroom in Riverhead, which is a part of the Long Island Aquarium (formerly Atlantis Marine World), so guests were able to go into the aquarium during the party. Let me tell you, it's not often when I'm covering an event that someone says "Would you like to go shoot the sea lion show?" Heck yeah, I would.

It was really such a pleasure to do this event. I saw a show at WHBPAC last month and they do amazing work. I highly recommend paying them a visit, or looking into their Arts Academy for your children. They have classes and camps if your kids take an interest in the performing arts. I was in the drama and art camp at Stony Brook School Summer Programs when I was a kid, so I know how amazing an experience that can be for a child. That's why I donated a family photo session to their fundraiser. It's so important to support the arts!

If anyone out there still doesn't have a Halloween costume, major inspiration is ahead! Without any further ado, here are the photos! (Click to see larger and use arrows to scroll.)

I must be crazy, right? It's not even Halloween!
Nevertheless, the holiday season is going to come up faster than you think. I used to wait until the last second to send my Christmas cards and I'd cross my fingers that my friends and family got them before the New Year arrived!
If you can believe it, the best time to take holiday photos is late October to mid-November. That way you can be sure there is plenty of time for your cards to be designed, edited, proofed and changed if necessary. Then you can sit back all December long in your jammies with hot cocoa and relax. Just kidding, you're probably going to be running around like a lunatic shopping and wrapping and baking like I always am. But hey, one less thing to think about would be nice, right?
Here are the holiday card designs I'm offering this year.

If you're looking for just a few photos to put on a holiday card, I'm offering mini holiday sessions this year. The sitting fee for these is $75 and they run for a half hour. These mini sessions are great if you just need one or two poses in your child's Christmas outfit. They differ from my full sessions, which offer more time and more options for outfit changes, props and locations.
