Angela's House is an organization that assists families of children with severe disabilities or conditions that require a lot of medical attention or equipment to survive. This amazing organization was started by Bob and Angie Policastro, whose daughter Angela was one such child. Their experience getting Angela the care she needed revealed to them the gaps in the system that could have provided them with support and resources to improve Angela's life, and theirs. They started Angela's House to make sure families going through similar issues would have an advocate on their side. Since 1992, they have been coordinating services for these families to get medically frail children the help they need, both at home and at residential facilities.
The work they do is incredibly inspiring. I've donated a basket with a free photo session and a $100 print credit for them to raffle off at their Rock and Roll Barbecue fundraiser this Sunday at 89 North in Patchogue. I've also seen some of the other fantastic raffle baskets they've collected and I can tell you there will be something there for everyone. I hope their fundraiser is so successful, because the work they do is so important for the families in this community. I'm really excited to be involved. You can find all the information about the event right here. Admission is $20. Come listen to great music, enjoy free BBQ and help support this life-saving organization at the same time!

I owe a lot to mothers.
Not only has my mother shaped my entire life, but the overwhelming majority of my business comes from mothers. Let me tell you, it is a rare day when a dad calls to schedule a photo session (rare as in, it has happened only once). Moms just seem to intuitively understand how important it is to document special moments.
That's why I'd like to take the time to thank all my amazing mom (and dog mom) clients who make it possible for me to do the thing I most love.

Allow me to introduce you to Ethan! Ethan lives all the way down in Maryland. During his first trip to visit New York, he and his mom came by and we took some fun photos in the studio, and around my (still very dead from winter) yard! Ethan and I took quite a shine to each other, I have to say. He gave me fantastic smiles. Don't you just love those chubby cheeks? I'm sad to say that this beautiful boy had to go back to Maryland, and I miss him already! I can't wait for his next visit!

Welcome to the world, Nadya! This precious girl came to visit me for her first photos. At first, she was wide awake and not terribly interested in modeling. Once she fell asleep, we were able to do tons of poses with the little princess. We even got her beautiful mom and handsome dad in on the fun. I love the photo of this tiny little girl in her dad's arms. I'm so honored to have been able to photograph the beginning of this family.

When I think of Peyton, I think of a little princess. She's such a sweetheart and she's the most stylish baby I know. She's always dressed to the nines, even down to her diaper cover! I was so glad to take photos of her to commemorate her first birthday. Even though she was tired from a tough time sleeping the night before, she still gave me some beautiful smiles. And just look at those eyes!

It's not typical to get a beautifully warm day in November on Long Island. When you do get one, you take advantage of it and head to the beach!
I shot this session with the Cameron Family at Robert Moses Beach, with the beautiful backdrop of sand, water and the Fire Island Lighthouse too! Apparently, a lot of other folks had the same idea. You can't tell from the photos, but the beach was packed. (Thank goodness for Photoshop's clone stamp tool).
We walked along the paths, strolled the beach, and even built a snowman out of sand and shells. His name? Sandy, of course.
This session shows that taking Christmas photos can be fun! Cruising the beach sure beats standing on line at the mall, huh?

Here are some photos from a holiday mini session I did in my studio this season, with sisters Mia and Julianna. Holiday mini sessions last a half hour and are perfect when you just need a few shots in one outfit for a holiday card. This is an 8x8 collage I created for my client from the session. Collages are a good way to get a lot of variety without ordering a ton of prints. These make great gifts for grandparents, and look fantastic framed in a wall display going up your stairs, for instance.

Today I'm highlighting a fun family session I had at Heritage Park in Mt. Sinai.
I've been photographing the Bryan family since their baby shower for their first child! It's been great to watch their family grow over the years. At this session, we set out to capture their first family portrait since baby Liam arrived! He definitely inherited his older sister Morgan's big smile.

Last week I had the privilege to shoot the Arts Academy Masquerade Gala Fundraiser for the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. Let me tell you, this wasn't just any old Halloween party, either. The detail and the thought that everyone put into their costumes was fantastic. The event was held at the Sea Star Ballroom in Riverhead, which is a part of the Long Island Aquarium (formerly Atlantis Marine World), so guests were able to go into the aquarium during the party. Let me tell you, it's not often when I'm covering an event that someone says "Would you like to go shoot the sea lion show?" Heck yeah, I would.
It was really such a pleasure to do this event. I saw a show at WHBPAC last month and they do amazing work. I highly recommend paying them a visit, or looking into their Arts Academy for your children. They have classes and camps if your kids take an interest in the performing arts. I was in the drama and art camp at Stony Brook School Summer Programs when I was a kid, so I know how amazing an experience that can be for a child. That's why I donated a family photo session to their fundraiser. It's so important to support the arts!

Even though your kids may be bummed that summer is over, the first day back to school is always a little exciting anyway. Capture that memory with an annual first day of school photo. Here are some tips on shooting a great back to school photo.
Look for Light
Find an area in your home with good natural light coming in. Have your child face an open window or door, or head outside for great lighting. Shooting in the early morning before the school day begins will make light soft and beautiful. Avoid using your camera's flash, which can make photos look flat.
Pick a Spot
Take your back to school photo in the same location every year, whether it be on your front porch or at the bus stop. Keeping it consistent will show your child's growth over the years and make it especially fun to flip through the photos when your children are older.
Provide a Prop
Give them something to do with their hands. Download this free printable sign so you always remember what grade your little scholar was in!
