As a photographer, I want to see my clients come in for professional photos as much as possible. I love creating meaningful art for their homes. I also know that my clients are busy. They can come to me for the holidays and big events in their lives, but what about the special little things that happen in their homes everyday? That's why I encourage my clients to take more photos at home. Today I want to offer a few tips to help improve the way you capture the magical moments in between studio sessions.
1. Get to know your camera!
You don't need to study your manual cover to cover, but at least familiarize yourself with the different scene modes your camera offers. Most point and shoot digital camera on the market include:
- Portrait mode: This is best for photographing faces up close.
- Landscape mode: This is best for scenery and large outdoor vistas.
- Night mode: This is best for shooting portraits at night with a flash.
- Sports mode: This is the shooting mode you might find most useful when taking photos of your children, because everyone knows that kids are fast! This mode will help freeze the action when your kids are running around a soccer field or just your backyard.

2. Give them something to do with their hands.
A small prop goes a long way to keep a kid in their seat long enough for you to snap a great photo. A stool or rocking horse can keep them grounded where you want them to be. A prop also gives you a great opportunity to catch your child interacting with their environment. Don't get discouraged if they throw it at your head and run away, though! Get candid shots of them on the run! Remember that it's not always about the smile. A pout or tears can make a beautiful and unique photo.
3. Make it a game!
If you want your child to sit or stand a certain way, show them! Tell them you're playing copycat and they win if they do what you do! Simon Says is also a great way to do this. For older kids, a great trick is to play the I bet you can't game. Saying "I bet you can't kiss your sister on the cheek" or "I bet you can't smile with your teeth!" is a good way to get what you're looking for. Showing them their photo on the back of the camera can help interest a child but use this as a last resort or else they'll make you stop and show them after every click of the shutter! Remember to give them a little prize when they do well. Next time they'll look forward to posing for a picture.

A yearbook style album of all your photos is a great way to organize your memories.
Now get shooting!

Two year old Morgan is well-known to anyone who's seen my portfolio, business cards, studio samples, etc. She's one of the first babies I photographed when I decided what I wanted my career path to be, and she and her family have come back to me many times since I first met her! That's why I couldn't wait to meet the newest addition to their family, her little brother Liam!
For only about a month old, Liam is one strong baby! He surprised me by being able to hold himself up for what became my favorite shot of the whole session. (How fitting that I was watching Disney's Hercules on Netflix while I was editing his photographs. I love animated movies, I'm not ashamed!)
After Liam got tired from his impressive show of strength, then it was Morgan's turn to show me more of her great modeling skills. She's got a great smile. That's why she's on so many of my marketing materials! I had a great time with these two siblings and I can't wait to see them again!

I love when clients come back to me with new additions to their family. For one, it shows they had a good experience with me and that they trust me to capture more memories for their family. Secondly, I get to see how the kids I've photographed in the past have grown and changed since I last saw them. That's why I was so happy to see little Annie come in with her new baby sister, Charley Grace. As you can see, beautiful blue eyes run in their family.
Annie was so sweet and eager to cuddle with Charley during the shoot. As a little sister myself, it was great to see the beginning of their bond. I know firsthand that a sister is one of the most important relationships of your life. Annie and Charley only have to look to their mom Robyn and their aunt Kelly, who came to help during the session, to see that. I can't wait to see these girls again in the future!

I have to say, every time I see Peyton, I think that this girl is the most fashionable baby I've ever met. Have you ever been envious of a child's wardrobe? I'll admit that I have!

As the very wise Kermit the Frog sang in my favorite Christmas movie, " The promise of excitement is one the night will keep. After all, there's only one more sleep 'til Christmas".
There's something magical about Christmas Eve so I thought I'd share one of my favorite holiday photo sessions with you today. This is the Cameron Family. You can find them all over my website! I told mom Erin that she could write the book on coordinating outfits for a photo shoot. They look great and we had a blast that day. My favorite image is of them laughing together. I love catching these moments because they're spontaneous and real. A moment like that can't be reproduced.
I hope you all have moments like that this holiday season.
