Babies FAQ
When is the best time for newborn portraits?
For those dreamy sleepy photos you love so much, your photography session should be scheduled within the first 6-14 days of your baby's life. Don't worry if you miss this window, though. After this time period, the baby becomes more aware and we can shoot beautiful infant portraits with eyes open or closed! You should schedule your sitting before the baby arrives to ensure availability. Babies tend to be happiest in the morning, so I generally start newborn sessions between 9-10am. Newborn sessions can last upwards of 3 hours to make time for feedings and getting baby back to sleep if they're restless.
What should my child and I wear to my photography session?
Newborns can be photographed in diaper covers, cloth wraps or just in the buff! I have cloth wraps in many colors but feel free to bring any headbands, diaper covers, hats or blankets that are special to you. I suggest that older siblings and any other family members be dressed in coordinating neutrals or muted colors of a similar palette. Avoid any distracting patterns or loud colors. If you need some inspiration, check out my Pinterest board for outfit inspiration: Outfit Inspiration for Clients. Be warned that the studio is kept quite warm during newborn sessions to mimic conditions in the womb, so layer if needed.
How do I prepare for my photo shoot?
When you book your session, I'll provide you with a "What to Expect" guide which includes information on what your session will be like and how best to prepare. I leave plenty of time in my schedule for newborns in case they need a feeding or time to cuddle during our session. I recommend you bring enough milk or formula to give a full feeding in case your baby gets hungry during our time together. Oh, and plenty of diapers. Accidents happen, you know? :) For older kids and families, just come prepared to smile and have fun.
One of my favorite past times has always been looking through old photos of my family and my childhood. Children today are photographed more than any generation ever before, but rarely do they see these images outside of a cell phone or a computer. I firmly believe every child should grow up seeing beautiful photographs of themselves hanging on the walls of their home. The reason I got into photography is a passion to give that to the families in my community.
