Pets FAQ
Where should my pet photography session take place?
Pet photos can take place inside my Farmingville home studio or outdoors at a location of your choice. Choose somewhere your pet will be comfortable, and visit there several times before the session to get them acclimated to their surroundings. If you have a fenced in backyard, I will be happy to shoot there. If you choose a location other than your home, please make sure pets and photography are allowed there. I will travel anywhere in Suffolk County, Long Island.
When is the best time for pet photographs?
For outdoor photos, a morning session provides good light for portraits, but they should be completed by 11:30 am to avoid unflattering shadows caused by the sun's position in the sky at noon. Evening portraits an hour or two before sunset provide the best and most flattering light. For studio portraits, any time of the day is perfectly fine, because the lighting is controlled.
How should I prepare for my pet photography session?
For dogs, plan on taking a walk about an hour or two before your session. It can be helpful to practice sit and stay commands a few days prior. If you are getting dogs or cats groomed prior to the session, make sure you do so a few days before, as both a grooming appointment and a photo shoot in one day can be taxing on an animal. It is suggested that you trim your pet's nails a few days before a studio session, to prevent tangles and damage to any furniture or props. Much appreciated :) Please also let me know of any issues your pet might have, such as aggression or anxiety so I can be sensitive to their needs and keep them as calm and safe as possible during our session. All pets should be up to date on their vaccinations and be currently on preventative flea and tick medications for the safety of my other clients.
What should I bring to my pet's photo shoot?
It's a great idea to bring a few of your pet's favorite toys and a good amount of water. You can bring treats, but I save this as a last resort because it can cause dogs to over salivate and lead to very slobbery photos. I also suggest you bring plenty of patience and a calm attitude. These sessions can take time, and pets can sense when their owners are frustrated or tense.
I believe that pets are members of the family and should be memorialized as such. They bring us immeasurable amounts of joy during their short but beautiful lives. Our pets stand by us through life and their portraits should hang on the walls beside ours as well.
